How to register a death in Israel

Please read these notes carefully - you may wish to print a copy for reference before proceeding.

There is no obligation for the death overseas of a British national to be registered with the British Embassy. However there are the advantages that a British form of death certificate is then available, and that a record of the death is afterwards held at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom.

Please note that a death in the Consular District of Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza should be registered with British Consul General in Jerusalem.

You may make your application in person or by post. If you send in an application by post, your documents will be returned to you by registered mail. The Embassy cannot accept responsibility for any delay, loss or damage to your documents caused by the postal services. If you wish to apply for this service, please complete and return the form 'Application for the Consular Registration of Death' (PDF, 17KB) to the British Consulate, Migdalor Building, 1 Ben Yehuda Street, Tel Aviv 63801.

The following services are chargeable in Israel under the Consular Fees Order 2005:

  • registering a death in the Consular Register of Death – (Fee No 27)
  • furnishing a certified copy on an entry in the Consular Register of Deaths.

There is also a postal charge for the return of your documents by registered post (currently NIS 10).

(Please note that all fees must be paid in cash or by postal order made payable to the British Embassy or by credit card by printing and completing a credit card payment authorisation form, (PDF, 55KB).

Before registering the death we need to see evidence of the national status of the person whose death is to be registered. Photocopies of documents are not acceptable, but original documents will be returned to you as soon as possible.

We need to see:

(a) The deceased's local death certificate

(b) Documentary evidence of the deceased's claim to British nationality, eg. British passport, Certificate of Naturalisation or Registration.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are applying from within the United Kingdom you should contact Nationality and Passports Section, Consular Directorate, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Old Admiralty Building , London SW1A 2LG Telephone 020 7008 0186.
