General information about living in Israel
Living in Israel
British visitors require a valid passport when entering Israel which should be valid for at least 6 months. A visa is not required for a visit not exceeding 3 months.
Currency
The money unit in Israel is the New Israeli Shekel (NIS) which is divided into 100 agorot. Money can be changed at banks, change offices and large hotels. Credit cards are widely accepted. Cashpoint (ATM) machines generally accept UK debit and credit cards.
Language
The national language is Hebrew although English and Arabic are widely spoken. It is also possible in places like Tel Aviv that you will often hear Russian too.
Hotels
A full range of hotels can be found from the reasonable prices to the expensive 5 star.
Transport
Buses (also 'Sheroots' - local minibuses), trains and taxis are available throughout Israel and are reasonable prices but see the Foreign and Commonwealth office website's Travel Advice which advises caution when considering use of buses and trains. When using taxis ensure that the taxi has a flag on its roof and that it has a meter which is switched on.
Airlines
Israel has one main airport, Ben Gurion at Tel Aviv, which is used by numerous international airlines. There are also some charter flights which fly to the resort Eilat. Israel's national airline is El Al although it has two smaller airlines, Arkia and Israir, which offer a few international routes.
Sightseeing
There are many places of interest in Israel. It is recommended that a good guide book, of which there are many available in bookstores, be obtained.
People
Israel has a very diverse ethnic and religious population. Again it is recommended that a good guide book be obtained. Most places in Israel are fairly open-minded but care should be taken when visiting Jerusalem as is some places, eg the Old City (a popular tourist site), appropriate clothing may be required.
